Root Canals in Calgary
Root Canals
Root canals are a routine procedure our dentists perform to treat infected or abscessed teeth. The more common signs of a root infection are unusual sensitivity to temperature and food, swelling of the gums, and discomfort. If you visit your dentist on a regular basis, they will let you know whether you’re in need of a root canal or you can call our offices to request an exam.
What Are Root Canals?
Root canals are a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. During a root canal, the dentist removes the damaged pulp (nerve and tissue inside the tooth), cleans and disinfects the area, and then fills and seals the tooth. This procedure helps save the natural tooth and can prevent the need for tooth extraction.
What Happens After a Root Canal
Once the root of your tooth is cleaned out and removed, your natural tooth stays in place, but it’s typically recommended that we add a dental crown to protect it. This allows you to maintain full function of the natural tooth, instead of extracting the tooth and replacing it with a restorative option, such as a dental bridge or dental implant.
