Root Canal Treatment in NW Calgary

At Hampton’s Dental, we deal with a variety of different types of dental needs. Some of our patients are regular visitors for cleanings and check-ups, some come in with dental emergencies, and some need treatment for cavities.

No matter what the reason, our loyal patients have been coming in for over 20 years of business to allow us to check-up on their oral hygiene. However, it is not always the case that a visit to our office will be as simple as a cleaning and a check-up.

For example, for some of our patients, more invasive treatment is necessary in order to prevent gum disease, heart disease, and other harmful effects that occur from a variety of dental health issues.

Root Canal Near You

Sometimes, a root canal is necessary to create and maintain healthy and shining smiles for years to come. While there is a lot of stigma behind root canals, our team deals with root canal procedures in NW Calgary on a regular basis. We know exactly what to do to keep you comfortable and your teeth healthy.

In order to get rid of some of the fears and anxieties that you may have towards this procedure, it is important that you understand the steps that our team will take in this operation, and also why it is necessary to receive one. Here’s what you need to know about root canal treatments.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is the process of removing infected nerve tissue to treat teeth that are suffering from severe infections and decay. By removing this infected tissue, the infection is prevented from spreading into the surrounding area and causing further problems in your mouth.

The dentist will first skillfully remove the affected tissue and ensure that the area surrounding it is healthy. Then, they will clean and seal the affected area on the tooth, making the effects of the root canal unnoticeable on your teeth.

Generally, you can expect a root canal to take one or two appointments, a little over an hour for each one.

When a Root Canal Becomes Necessary

So, you know how it will be done, but why should you get treatment?

The answer is simple: do not let the fear over one simple root canal allow the infection to grow throughout several of your healthy teeth.

This procedure is necessary so that any infected nerve tissue is out of your tooth to prevent it from spreading and forming abscesses in your mouth. If you are unfamiliar with abscesses, they are nasty infections that form in the gums and could result in patients having to lose teeth.

Your root canal will be a fast and efficient procedure that will keep your smile healthy and allow you to live a pain-free life.

What happens during a root canal?

If your dentist has told you that you need a root canal, then you’re probably wondering what to expect. There are several steps in carrying out a root canal procedure.

If your dentist has already decided that you need a root canal, then chances are you have already undergone an X-ray to determine where the decay or infection is. Before the actual procedure, local anesthesia is applied to the affected tooth. The anesthesia numbs the area so that you feel pressure during the procedure but not actual pain.

Next, an incision is made in the tooth root and the infected pulp is removed. This step is called pulpectomy. The final step of the procedure is the filling the root where the pulp was removed. A filling material called gutta-percha is used followed by cement.

What should you do after a root canal?

A root canal can successfully restore your tooth with long-lasting effect. However, it’s still crucial that you exercise proper care after your procedure. This means observing good oral hygiene by regularly brushing and flossing your teeth. It’s also advisable that you avoid chewing hard foods as these can affect the root canal.
