Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used to repair damaged or decayed teeth. Inlays fit within the cusps of the tooth, while onlays cover one or more cusps or the entire biting surface. Inlays and onlays are sturdy solutions to fill areas too large for a dental filling.

When tooth damage is too severe for a filling, inlays and onlays provide a strong, durable restoration. Compared to a crown, an inlay or onlay also helps preserve more of the natural tooth structure. Similar to dental fillings, inlays and onlays can be made using composite resin to blend in naturally with your surrounding teeth.

How Do Inlays and Onlays Work?

Your dentist will start by removing the decay or damaged area of the tooth. Next, they’ll take an impression of the tooth to make the inlay or onlay for. While you’re waiting for your custom restoration, a temporary solution will be placed on your tooth. When the custom piece arrives, your dentist will apply a bonding agent to your tooth to permanently attach the inlay or onlay.
