Dental Emergencies in NW Calgary

When it comes to dental health, it is recommended that you see a dentist immediately as soon as you feel any pain or discomfort in your teeth. Delaying the checkup can eventually worsen the condition and may need a more serious treatment. However, there are instances when you might experience unexpected injuries in your teeth or gums. These emergency injuries include teeth that have been loosened, cracked, chipped, fractured or completely knocked out. In these situations, it is important to have an emergency dentist that can be available to you as soon as possible.

Seeing a dentist right away during an emergency is crucial and can make the difference between saving the affected tooth or losing it.

Hamptons Emergency Dental Process

In case your tooth has accidentally fallen out, make sure that you call your dentist right away to set an emergency appointment. In the meantime, it is important to refrain from handling or touching the tooth near the root (the bottom part that lies below the gum). Touching this part of the tooth can damage nerves which can make it impossible to reattach the tooth to the bone. If possible, put the tooth back in its socket if it stays in place. Otherwise, wrap the tooth in medical gauze or a soft cloth and soak it in milk. This will keep the tooth moist as it’s important not to let a detached tooth dry out.

In case the tooth has not fallen out but has been loosened from its position, you may try to realign the tooth using very gentle pressure. NEVER attempt to force the tooth back into position as this might damage the tooth cells and cause it to fall out completely.

A fractured or swollen tooth can be a source of extreme pain and discomfort. Use warm water to rinse your mouth and flush out dirt or blood if any. To soothe swelling and pain, apply cold compress to the fractured area. To reduce pain, you may take ibuprofen instead of aspirin. It is also imperative that you do not attempt to treat the tooth yourself as only a dentist can determine how bad the fracture is and how it should be treated.
